It takes a bit of trial and error to find the right setting that doesn’t cause your laptop to freeze or crash, but the benefits are well worth the effort. This is a handy technique for notebook owners who want to undervolt their GPU, reducing its heat and power consumption. While mobile GPUs have become very efficient in the last two years, every little bit counts.įinally, for those who don’t mind getting their hands dirty, it’s possible to change the power curve of modern NVIDIA GPUs using MSI Afterburner. If you’re on a notebook, you’ll definitely want to make sure “Optimal power”, or at least “Adaptive” is selected in the global settings. You can then use “Prefer maximum performance” for only those titles. For demanding games that don’t play well with Optimal Power or Adaptive, find (or create) the required profile in the “Program Settings” tab of the “Manage 3D settings” page. The NVIDIA Control Panel allows you to configure profiles for games on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately, this will increase the “idle” heat and power draw of your GPU, even when you’re not doing anything. Now, it’s tempting to hit up the driver’s global settings and set the power management mode to the aforementioned value and never think about it again. As the name suggests, this setting will run your card at its maximum clocks all the time. Newer NVIDIA cards feature several more options, such as “NVIDIA driver-controlled” and “Prefer consistent performance”, but the only other choice you need to worry about is “Prefer maximum performance”. ![]() However, Optimal Power adds another feature - it’ll stop the GPU rendering a new frame if nothing has changed on screen and instead reuse what’s already in the framebuffer. Both options will modulate the core and memory clock speeds and voltage of your GPU, increasing them during times of load and decreasing them when demand is low. Optimal power superseded the previous default, called “Adaptive”. This setting was introduced into the company’s video drivers with the GTX 1080, specifically version 368.22 release in May 2016. ![]() By default, NVIDIA sets the power management mode of your GPU (be it in card or laptop form) to “Optimal power”. ![]() ![]() My coworker Melissa Rorech is one of those people. People who are susceptible to minor weather changes might find the Embr Wave more useful than I do. My body temperature seems to regulate itself normally I've only had issues when suffering from fevers and one unfortunate hypothermia incident after a day of skiing. I can’t speak for people who have internal issues with thermal regulation. If you’re in a stuffy subway car, it won’t cool you down enough to stop that bead of sweat from slipping down your back, no matter how low you set the temperature. It didn’t calm my heart rate after walking up four flights of stairs or prevent a shiver in icy office air. The Embr Wave didn’t-and can’t-change the surrounding environment or lower the dew point. The Embr Wave app lets you control the temperature with a little more precision.īut the temperature change, to me at least, seemed limited to the area on my wrist. The cooling phase, in particular, contradicts your natural expectation that a surface will warm when touched, so there’s something counterintuitive and interesting about it. When you wear the device, a spot on your wrist will feel the warmth or coolness it emits, and it’s a pleasant, even intriguing, sensation. ![]() In one sense, the Embr Wave does exactly what it claims. I wore the Embr Wave on and off for a few weeks to see whether or not it could keep me cool in a heat wave or warm me up in overzealous office air conditioning. There's also an app you can use to fine-tune the temperature. Pressing a button on the Embr Wave makes it heat up (or cool down) against your wrist, which then-according to the manufacturers-warms (or cools) the rest of you. You wear the Embr Wave on the inside of your wrist, directly against the pulse point said to be so sensitive to temperature change that targeting it with heat or cold can thermoregulate the entire body. ![]() The wrist-worn device-just a little bigger than an Apple Watch-comes with an inch-wide magnetic metal strap that fastens around your arm. However, I will note that there's something new for everyone here, whether you're a veteran of the original games or coming in for the first time as part of the remake wave. Resident Evil 4: Story (Spoiler Free)Ĭovering Resident Evil 4's story is tough without leading into spoiler territory, and naturally, we don't want to ruin the game's surprises. Comparing the original Resident Evil 4, which was utterly impressive in its day, to what we have now is almost like comparing a horse-drawn cart to a Tesla. The Resident Evil team continues to light the way for some of the industry's heavyweights with large catalogs of classic games. A huge array of toys and weapons await players to deal with the game's various mutated threats, and the game's art direction and cutting-edge tech complement each other with orchestral precision. Without spoiling, some of the original game's boss battles and enemies just work so much better with modern technology powering the experience, elevated ever further by the game's impressive dynamic gore physics and destructible environments. The sheer quality makes the novelty more than worth it for me. I had no issue gunning for visual quality over performance playing Resident Evil 4. And if you don't want to sacrifice frames, you can always tweak the settings to tailor your experience. And there are a couple of areas in the game besieged by heavy weather effects that impact performance, but it's an acceptable trade-off for something that just looks so damn pretty. ![]() You may see some jitter if you spin the camera really quickly, too. The game runs with an uncapped frame rate that targets 60 FPS, and generally speaking, it offers an incredibly smooth experience.Įven with resolution mode turned on and ray tracing maxed out, the game retains smooth performance overall - although, on occasion, I noticed textures would get stuck in a lower-resolution compressed mode for a second or two before loading in. I'm thrilled to note that Resident Evil 4 performs excellently across Xbox Series X and Series S, bucking a trend that often sees the Series S versions left far behind the curve. Noteworthy sequences from the game's original take on new life thanks to the power and performance of the RE Engine, and Capcom uses every tool at its disposal to really elevate some of the original's classic set pieces. Volumetric mist and realistic shadows make the game's meticulously sculpted environments screenshot-worthy at every turn. For most of the game, I played in performance mode with ray tracing turned on, trading some resolution sharpness for stunning dynamic lighting that served to make Resident Evil 4 one of the most stunning games I've laid eyes on. You can enable ray tracing in both resolution mode and performance mode as well. You can disable the game's more complex hair textures, for example, to claw back some overheads for general performance, for example. It helps a ton that Resident Evil 4 offers players on Xbox Series X and S a variety of visual tweaks to help tailor your experience to your liking. It's the only console implementation of ray tracing I've seen that doesn't prohibitively impact performance. And what exactly do I mean by "least intrusive," you might ask. Resident Evil 4 is perhaps most notable for its ray tracing implementation, which I would argue is the best and least intrusive I've experienced in a modern game so far. Resident Evil 4 continues RE Engine's winning streak, meticulously balancing visual depth and performance on the new-gen systems. Not to call out anyone specifically, but launching rough and patching later seems to be standard practice in 2023, but it seems Capcom has decided to buck the trend. Recent releases from various major publishers have often had one thing in common: shoddy launch performance. ![]() ![]() ![]() The group-which also includes longtime Farrar collaborators Andrew DuPlantis on bass guitar and Mark Spencer on keyboards, guitar and steel guitar-has an obvious chemistry.
