In July 2023, analyst Maya Carlin of the Center for Security Policy expressed concerns that sanctions against Russia, due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine had slowed or stopped the aircraft's development. On 16 August 2022, United Aircraft Corporation reported that they plan to build four prototypes of the Su-75 Checkmate, with flight tests planned for as early as 2024. The potential export sales also stalled because Russia cannot trade using U.S. Su-75 Checkmate development could be delayed due to international sanctions on Russia, and Russia could not import semiconductors and high-tech machining equipment from the European Union. On 14 November 2021, it was reported that the production of several prototypes of the Checkmate had begun at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant, where the Sukhoi Su-57 is manufactured. Īccording to the chief executive of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, the LTS Checkmate is expected to cost US $25–30 million each. Production is forecast to be 300 planes over 15 years. The Checkmate is designed to be low cost and for export, and may compete with the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II and Shenyang FC-31 aircraft of the same light to medium-weight category. The Checkmate's maiden flight was first scheduled for 2023 and then slipped to 2024, with initial deliveries planned for 2026–2027. On July 13, Rostec company United Aircraft Corporation released a teaser video via YouTube, promoting what it described as a “fundamentally new military aircraft” developed under a project named ‘Checkmate’. It is said to be a single-engine combat jet and has been called a “lightweight stealth fighter” by defense editor for Aviation Week, Stephen Trimble. The emergence of photos of a mockup of the aircraft on July 15 and 18 caused quite a stir. The official Twitter account of Rostec, Russia’s state-owned defense and technology development group, tweeted an image of the nose of the aircraft on July 18, which said, “Guys, do you really think that we still have nothing to surprise you with?” A new image of Russian ‘Checkmate’ fighter jet. “Here it is the Sukhoi LTS Checkmate,” read the tweet. The images tweeted by aviation expert Andreas Rupprecht offer a clear view of the new fighter jet. The mystery aircraft which many experts call ‘CheckMate’ is expected to be unveiled on the first day of the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon in Zhukovsky, on July 20. A few more images of what is believed to be Russia’s new fifth-generation fighter jet, which could “checkmate” the US F-35, have appeared on social media.
